VMHS senior, Michael Iglesias, receives acceptance letter for MIT

The first words Michael read when he opened his letter from MIT were “Congratulations” and he immediately knew his hard work had paid off. He had just been accepted to the university and the first thing he did was call his parents (Hector and Leticia Iglesias). He let them know the great news and they were very excited for him.

The list of future MIT students is a calculated reveal date because the names are released on

March 14th which celebrates Pi Day (3.14) at exactly 6:28 p.m. eastern time which coincides with Tau Time (2 π). What a fun and exciting way to do the big reveal!

Iglesias is the second in his family to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), his brother is currently studying physics at the university. Michael states that he will be forging his own path at the university primarily due to his interests are more in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science.

“It wasn’t until my brother graduated from VMHS and he got accepted to MIT that I realized the caliber of university he was going to,” said Iglesias. “That is when I discovered that this was university I wanted to attend.”

Iglesias has been preparing for a career in this field all throughout high school. He has been busy taking classes and participating in organizations that he knew would help him in his future endeavors such as: AP Physics, Chemistry, Math as well as being involved in UIL Math, Science, Calculator, SeaPerch, National Honor Society, Patriot Engineering, and Mu Alpha Theta.

When Iglesias applied to the university he also submitted a project in addition to his application. He worked hard in putting a Maker’s Portfolio together which includes plans, videos of the building process, and photos for a electrical engineering LED flasher that he built. His passion is to meld electrical engineering and computer science to build robots that will be used instead of humans for more dangerous tasks.

“I still can’t believe that I will be spending the next four years at MIT,” states Iglesias.

Although, it may still be sinking in for Michael that his next four years will be spent in Massachusetts. He does hope to one day obtain his doctorate degree and become a professor but for now he is preparing for MIT.
