Bryan Elementary selects Landry Gilpin as reader for Literacy Night

Bryan Elementary held a Literacy Night event on Thursday, April 4th and Landry Gilpin was the featured reader. As a tribute to his future alma mater, Gilpin, chose to read Rufus Goes to Sea to the students. The main character wants to become a pirate and the treasure he finds at the end is a treasure of books.

Gilpin is currently Veterans Memorial High School senior and was recently named Mr. Texas Football Player of the Year. He has received many awards and accolades throughout high school for his athletic ability but he has also received academic recognition. He currently is a National Honor Society member, a Mission Excellence recipient and is currently ranked 15th out of 478 students in his class. He received a scholarship to attend Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas which is home to the Pirates.

The entire literacy event was planned around a pirate theme and the local businesses that participated had some special loot for the students as they stopped by their tables. They gave away books, pencils, notepads, bubbles, clay and many other items. A special thanks to Chick-fil-a, Speer Memorial Library, Peter Piper Pizza, and Chuck E. Cheese for participating in this event.
