Mission CISD students Raise their Books for Texas Reading Initiative

Mission CISD students along with other students from throughout the state raised their books for the “Texas Reads One Book” initiative. This is the fifth year that Dallas Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett reads the first chapter of a book to students.

This year’s selection was “Friendship According to Humphrey” by Bette G. Birney via a pre-recorded message; and, students were able to read along in their books. Elementary campuses also invited parents to come in and read with their child and encouraged them to read alongside their children. This type of activity helps create a culture of literacy not only at school; but, at home and throughout the community.

This book is about Humphrey who has been away on a long winter vacation. Upon his return to school, he is surprised to find out that there is a new classroom pet. He offers Og, the frog, his friendship; but, Og isn’t interested. Ultimately, he learns the meaning of true friendship and that actions and intentions can sometimes be misinterpreted.

Campuses received books, participated in school activities; and, parents were provided literacy and instructional resources which included family and community engagement tools. All students received a complimentary copy of the book from the district and were encouraged to develop lifetime, recreational habits at school and at home. So, grab your book and start reading!
