Mission CISD hosts Battle of the Bluebonnet Books contest

The Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) Battle of the Bluebonnet Books was held on Thursday, December 5th. This contest is a quiz-show style format where students from the district’s elementary schools compete against each other. The winning team moves on to represent the district at a similar book battle held at Region One Service Center in the spring.

First place team is Bryan Elementary School and the team members are: Sarali Solis, Adrian Montelongo, and Valetin Mayorga. They are under the direction of Elizabeth Mendez (Librarian), and Melba Reyna (Librarian Assistant).

Second place went to Cantu Elementary School. The team members include: Alexa Rodriguez, Aliha Reyna, and Mileen Hernandez. They are under the direction of Angela K. Garza (Librarian).

Alton Elementary School took third place and the team members are: Kaylin Penk, Briseyda Pena, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, and Kara Hernandez. They are under the direction of Yonia Martinez (Librarian).

This is the 11th year the district has hosted the Battle of Bluebonnet Books competition. Mission CISD librarians have used the Texas Library Association’s Bluebonnet Book Awards program to help encourage elementary students to read a wide variety of books. The Bluebonnet Books consist of 20 different books, selected by a committee of librarians from the Texas Library Association.

This contest challenges campus teams with answering several questions on several books on the Bluebonnet list. The concept was first introduced ten years ago by the Bryan Elementary librarian at that time, Charlyn Trussel.
