Mission CISD receives COVID-19 student support recovery grant

Mission, Texas- Additional mental health resources will be available to support Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) students as the 2020-2021 school year gets started this August. Officials have received notification that the district will receive a COVID-19 Student Support Recovery Grant from the School-Based Healthcare Solutions Network (SBHSN).

Ten Mission CISD schools qualified for the grant benefits that will provide for a fully-funded mental health professional (referred to as a transitional coach) for each campus and up to $5,000 for resources for the next five years at each of the ten schools (up to $250,000 total over 5 years).

“Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the caseload for some of our mental health providers was a challenge,” explained Jesse Treviño, coordinator for counseling and student services. “This grant will help us support the needs of more students in not just coping with their issues, but to help them become more resilient.”

Treviño said they are currently working on the implementation plan with several goals in mind that include not just meeting immediate mental health supports, but to also help ensure students succeed in the long-term academically, socially, and emotionally.

The campuses qualifying for the program are: Mission High School, Veterans Memorial High School, Mission Jr. High School, K. White Jr. High School, Alton Memorial Jr. High School, R. Cantu Jr. High School, Bryan Elementary School, Capt. J. Castro Elementary School, O’Grady Elementary School, Waitz Elementary School.
