Alton Elementary promoting virtual Library Story Time

Alton Elementary continues to promote reading even through the pandemic, only now, they are doing it virtually. The campus librarian, Ms. Yonia Martinez, has started to have Library Story Time on Friday afternoons.

“The students really enjoy it especially because they get to do it from home in comfortable clothing,” states Ms. Martinez. “I really like to choose a book that the students can relate to, maybe something that contains a topic we have been discussing during the week.”

According Ms. Martinez, she promotes reading for learning and enjoyment. She encourages the students to continue with their reading from home and to keep up with their reading log.

The students have multiple sources that allow them to continue reading at home and also have the opportunity to test online for the Accelerated Reader Program. Authors are even reading their own books virtually and students can access any of those sessions at no charge.

Ms. Martinez introduces a new book every Friday at 2:00 p.m. and because the campus is a Leader in Me campus her lesson also incorporates the 7 habits of Happy Kids/Effective Leaders. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.

Students had the special treat of listening to “A is for Another Rabbit ” by Hannah Batsel this past Friday.  So, make sure to stay tuned this week to see what book will be read for Library Story Time.
