Mission CISD students forge forward to obtain welding certification

Mission CISD will have a total of 14 students that will be receiving their welding certification in May 2021 as part of the South Texas College School- Career Academy and Dual Enrollment (SCADE) program. Mission High School (MHS) and Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) both have seven students each that will be reaching this milestone.

Welding is just one of the many programs that are available to students in which they can receive a certification before they even graduate high school. Students have been attending in person class twice a week to work on their projects and they work on obtaining OSHA certification on the other three.

“With all the adversity and all the obstacles our students found a way to get it done,” states Rene Peña, VMHS welding instructor. “I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve our students at Mission CISD during this challenging time. “

This semester may look different with all the safety protocols in place but the welding students have been diligently working on a variety projects such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, and Layout & Fabrication, in order to complete their coursework and be ready to receive their certification in the spring.
