Five Mission High School students advance to state following virtual SkillsUSA contest

----

Five Mission High School law enforcement students will be representing Mission CISD at the State SkillsUSA contest, which will be held virtually in April 2021.

SkillsUSA is a partnership between students, teachers and industry representatives, who work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce, according to its website. With the goal of helping students excel, SkillsUSA aims to prepare students who hope to pursue careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, which also includes health occupations.

Victoria Blanco, Lisa Garza and Jetlynn Gonzalez will be advancing after placing 1st in the Crime Scene Investigation category, and Ricardo Reyes and Samuel Lopez advanced after placing second in the Felony Traffic Stop category. The students are led by advisors Frank Rios and Belinda Chrostowski, respectively.

During the competition, the students took a test based on their knowledge of the event, as well as submitted their resume. The law enforcement students competed as part of District 13, which spans from Roma to Raymondville and is the largest district in the state, according to Rios, who teaches Law Enforcement at Mission High School. Only the top two teams from each district are able to advance to the state level.

“All five seniors have represented Mission High School through all their years in Law Enforcement and have advanced in their respective category to state competitions,” Rios said. “We are proud of their efforts and commitment to the program.”

The students will have a chance to continue showing off their skills during the virtual state competition in April. Congratulations to the students and their advisors and best of luck at state!
