VMHS engineering students advance to state competition

Mission, Texas- Three teams of engineering students at Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) are advancing to state SkillsUSA competitions. The campus had four teams compete for the chance to advance.

The advancing Engineering Technology/Design team consists of Autumn Gonzalez, Naydelyn Nunez, Loryn Sanchez. The competition recognizes outstanding engineering design projects developed by a three-member team. The teams that compete in this challenge present their innovative idea along with a design board, a design prototype, and an engineering notebook.

The advancing Applied Engineering team consists of: Lucal Dovalina, Julio De Leon, Nyleen Canizalez, Marco Rivera. This contest focuses on the ability of the four-member team to demonstrate their ability to work together to solve a problem. The students are given four hours to complete an applied engineering problem that must follow certain specifications. The team uses sound engineering concepts and problem-solving processes to develop, document, present, and execute a plan of action.

The advancing Mechatronics team consists of Marco Rivera and Juan Abrego. The contest evaluates each team’s preparation for employment and recognizes outstanding students for excellence and professionalism in the field of Mechatronics. The contest assesses general knowledge of Mechatronics technology. Teams competing in this event rotate between various simulation software applications and participate in interviews which evaluate their proficiency with each technology.

The Engineering Technology/Design team of Lauren Peralez, Maximus Perez, and Jose Gonzalez scored very well at the state qualifying event, but will not be advancing to state. They earned silver. Only those teams earning gold advanced to state.

The state competitions will be virtual and are scheduled for early April.
