VMHS students growing vegetables in the campus garden

Mission, Texas- Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) students from the Horticulture class created a campus garden. This class is part of a program at VMHS called Farm to School where they are teaching students how to grow their own food. Students will transition into the Mission FARMERS Program initiated by the district when they relocate to land the district has purchased at 3-mile line and Conway. The ultimate goal is to provide fresh vegetables for Mission CISD school cafeterias and the Mission Food Bank.

At the VMHS garden, they currently grow the following herbs and vegetables: okra, cantaloupe, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lima beans, rosemary, basil, oregano, radishes, salad greens, red romaine, and chile de monte. They also have a butterfly garden to encourage the pollination of plants.

They recently dedicated their campus garden to Anna Navarro, a former VMHS science teacher who recently passed away and installed a garden flag with her picture on it in our garden. Special thanks to Carlos Lerma (MCISD Career Technical Education) and Jose Escamilla from Mission High School for helping start the garden at VMHS.
