MCISD prepares and employs students through Apprenticeship Program

Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) administrators devise an innovative plan that is beneficial for students and at the same time aids the district. They have created employment positions that fall under the umbrella of an Apprenticeship Program. Last spring when students started to return for in person instruction, administrators knew that some students were not returning because they had jobs. Executive leadership started brainstorming to see how the district could help these students with employment that would be more flexible with their school schedule.

“One of the things we noticed when we brought our children back, we found out that many of the secondary students had jobs and were helping out their families by working. Students did not want to lose their jobs and their schedules did not lend them the flexibility to attend in person instruction,” states Dr. Carol G. Perez, superintendent.

Mission CISD wanted to offer these students an opportunity with the district where the mutual agreement would be beneficial to all. Students could get paid, have a flexible schedule, and continue in person instruction.  Mission CISD would hire students for a few hours to assist the different departments and also provide them the preparation for any future employment.

“These are the opportunities that are becoming available for our students, and we are really excited about this because students are learning a lot about the job market and learning soft skills like how to speak with an employer, how to collaborate with their employer and more,” states Dr. Carol G. Perez, superintendent.  “Once students are working in these professions, they are going to be able to see role models and work side by side with these professionals.  This experience may help them choose future employment.”
