Veterans Memorial High School athlete to join university’s inaugural cross-country program

MISSION,TX - Mission CISD student-athlete Kassidy Villalobos signed a letter of intent to join Texas A&M University Texarkana’s inaugural’s cross country program.

Villalobos was joined by family, friends and coaches on Monday, Feb. 21 at the Veterans Memorial high School Gymnasium, where they celebrated her athletic career and her dreams at the collegiate level.

“I started running in 2nd grade, joined my first cross country team in 6th grade and have been fortunate enough to be in the Lady Patriot Cross Country Varsity Team since my freshman year,” Villalobos said. “I believe this final season was both my best and saddest because although I did make it to Regionals, I am saying goodbye to the friends I love the most.”

VMHS Athletic Coordinator Coach Gilpin shared that Villalobos’ presence impacted the program greatly and also inspired young girls to join the program as well.

“We are incredibly proud of Kassidy and are looking forward to seeing her continue to excel at the collegiate level,” Gilpin said. “We will miss her and the rays of sunshine she brings to the rest of the girls on the team.”

During the signing, Villalobos shared her appreciation to everyone who supported her through every success and failure.

“Like many, the COVID-19 pandemic hindered my ability as a runner,” the senior said. “I especially had a hard time overcoming the feeling of failure, but with the help and support of my family, I have prospered. With that, I would like to thank both my parents from the bottom of my heart.”

Congratulations and best of luck to Kassidy Villalobos and her new cross country team!
