MCHS self-taught digital animator wins State Runner Up for Young Filmmakers Festival

Mission Collegiate High School junior, Marylou Treviño, is the State Runner Up in the UIL Young Filmmakers Festival for the category of Division I Digital Animation held at the University of Texas at Austin. This is the first time she has ever submitted her digital animation work in any contest.

Her journey started with a mention of the contest by an educator and then she got to work on her project straight out of her smartphone. She is a self-taught digital animator that used a free phone app called FlipaClip to create her short film for this competition called “Alloy the Robot and the Puppy.”

“This is the first time I have submitted a short digital animation film for competition and to see the results of placing 2nd in State is exciting,” states Marylou Treviño, MCHS student. “My project is about robots and the lack of social understanding about human behavior.”

The main character of this short animation is called Alloy and there are some comedic instances that many will enjoy. The animation project is approximately 2 minutes and 40 seconds in its entirety. Marylou’s project was also premiered in Austin, Texas along with other contest winners.

She is looking forward to next year’s contest and encourages her fellow students that have the same love of art or digital animation to participate in a contest like this one. After graduation she is planning to attend the University of Rio Grande Valley and will seek a degree in criminology.

Although she may one day be a lawyer her creative side may have her working on animation projects as well. Here is a link to view her short animation film https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trxeYMFD6k0 .
