The recognition is awarded by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a leading children’s health organization, that celebrates schools’ dedication to supporting the health and well-being of student, staff, and families.

Schools are recognized for implementing best practices in up to nine topic areas, based on criteria in Healthier Generation’s Thriving Schools Integrated Assessment:

  2. Cultivating Staff Well-Being
  3. Increasing Family and Community Engagement
  4. Improving Nutrition and Food Access
  5. Implementing Local School Wellness Policy
  6. Bolstering Physical Education and Activity
  7. Enriching Health Education
  8. Promoting Tobacco-Free Schools
  9. Supporting School Health Services

Alton Elementary School and Waitz Elementary Media and Communications Academy are recognized as All-Stars on the list of America’s Healthiest Schools for implementing best practices in all nine health categories.

As a school district, Mission CISD is the fourth highest awarded district with it’s 21 campuses earning awards.

“We had a very strong record of supporting student health initiatives through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation before the pandemic started,” explained Dr. Carol G. Perez, Superintendent. “To know that our campuses have been able to maintain a focus on wellness as we returned to a challenging school year last year, says a great deal about our campus staff. Their continued commitment to try and meet all the needs of students is to be commended.”

Healthier Generation’s list of America’s Healthiest Schools remains one of the country’s longest running, nationwide recognition programs honoring schools for achievements in supporting the whole health of students, teachers, and staff.
