Mission CISD Continues to Prepare for the Unexpected

Mission, Texas – As a part of efforts to promote a safe learning and work environment, Mission Consolidated Independent School District has partnered once again with a one-of-a-kind emergency preparedness training program. This time around, school security officers participated in a one-day hands-on course that included classroom and field training. A similar training was hosted for nurses, trainers, and other school officials in the fall.

“These drills are very important, not only for our staff but for our administrative staff in the district”, explained James Cardoza, Mission CISD Safety and Security/Preparedness and Response Specialist. “Our security staff is the first line of defense, alongside our contracted school resource officers so it’s important that they have this background and knowledge so that they can react in any emergency situation”.

Mr. Cardoza says the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training, which is developed by the Defense Health Agency (DHA) Joint Trauma System, is designed to be as realistic as possible, giving the attendees challenges that go beyond the classroom.

“We wanted to create team building exercises for our staff across the district, and this is it," said Mr. Cardoza. “Through this training, they will be exercising communication, leadership, guidance and also following direct instructions from others without the use of some sort of administrative, or rank associated with them”.

For the participants, the training teaches a better understanding of the dynamics when it comes to traumatic events. Including life-saving techniques and strategies for providing the best trauma care in active situations.

Mr. Cardoza shares that student and faculty safety is number one next to education at Mission CISD. “We are working diligently on a day-to-day basis on practicing prevention. Having to do that keeps our mindset focused on safety first with our students and staff.”
