New Legacy, Same Mission: Mission CISD Welcomes Coach Thomas Lee as New Athletic Director

MISSION, TEXAS (June 19, 2024) – Mission CISD is proud to announce the appointment of Coach Thomas Lee as the new Athletic Director.

With a rich history rooted in Mission CISD excellence and an extensive career in athletics, Lee is set to lead the district’s athletic programs to new heights.

Lee’s journey in athletics began in 1994, but his connection to Mission CISD goes back much further.

"My dad was the head football coach here at Mission High School from 1983 to 1987. Before he passed away, the Fieldhouse was named after him, so this place is special to me," Lee said. “As a 1989 graduate of Mission High School, I have deep ties to the community and commitment to Mission CISD.”

After graduating, Lee played college football at Rice University and later transferred to Texas State University. His coaching career started with a call from Sharyland ISD, where he served as a defensive backs coach.

Over the years, Lee has worn many hats, including head golf coach, head track coach, and head football coach. He has a decorated coaching resume with numerous championships and accolades, including leading the golf team to the state tournament three times and winning a UIL medal.

From 2002 to 2007, Lee served as the head football coach at Mission High School. He then returned to Sharyland ISD, where he took on various roles, including head track coach and special teams coordinator.

In 2014, he became the athletic coordinator and head track coach at Pioneer High School, where he built the athletic program from the ground up.

Under his leadership as the head football coach from 2018-2021, the football program at Pioneer High School saw significant success, advancing to the regional semifinals and finals.

In 2021, Lee transitioned into an administrative role, with a master’s degree from Lamar University and a passion for administration, Lee was well-prepared for the opportunity.

"When our longtime athletic director Richard Thompson retired, I stepped into the assistant AD role,” Lee said. “Now, with the retirement of the former AD at Mission CISD, Leticia Ibarra, I am thrilled to take on the leadership of the athletic program.”

SPRINTING AHEAD

Returning to Mission CISD as the athletic director is a dream come true, Lee said.

"This is where my journey started, and it’s an honor to return. I know many of the coaches, some of whom I’ve coached myself, and I’m eager to help MCISD reach its full potential," he said.

His vision includes leveraging his vast experiences to open new doors for students and coaches, fostering growth, and developing future leaders.

"We have great programs, great coaches, and great kids here. I am fortunate to bring my experiences from other districts back to Mission,” Lee said. “I look forward to working with younger coaches to develop our future leaders. At some point, I will be gone, and someone will need to take over. I am excited about helping shape that future," he said.

Mission CISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Cris Valdez said having Lee on board will be of great benefit to the district.

“Mission CISD is confident that Coach Lee’s leadership will inspire and elevate the district’s athletic programs,” she said. “His dedication to the community, coupled with his extensive experience, sets the stage for a bright future for Mission CISD athletics!”
