Mission CISD Announces Lone Finalist for Superintendent

MISSION, TEXAS (August 22, 2024) - The Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) Board of Trustees has named Dr. Cris Valdez as the Lone Finalist for Superintendent of the district at a Special Meeting held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.  

Dr. Valdez brings 32 years of experience in education. Her most recent role was the Deputy Director for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at Region One Education Service Center. 

Dr. Valdez began her career in education with Weslaco ISD as a substitute teacher. Her journey through the educational ranks includes roles as a high school English teacher, varsity athletic coach, varsity cheer coach, high school assistant principal, middle school principal, elementary principal, and district bilingual coordinator. 

She joined Mission CISD as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and served as Interim Superintendent from 2017 through 2018.  

Additionally, Dr. Valdez also has experience as Assistant Superintendent in Garland ISD, where she supported 56,000 students, and served as Interim Superintendent in Weslaco ISD in 2021. 

Dr. Valdez expressed her emotions after hearing the announcement, sharing, "I adore Mission; this is home for me. This was where my journey in executive leadership began, and I can’t wait to get started. I thank the board for the honor, trust, and confidence they have in me." 

She will officially begin her tenure as Superintendent following a required 21-day waiting period before the hiring can become finalized.
