MISSION, TEXAS (November 6, 2024) - Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) is putting wellness first by creating campus environments filled with calm, confidence, and meaningful connections for all students.
Made possible through the Stronger Connections Grant, these initiatives are designed to promote mental health and emotional wellness across the district, providing students with essential tools to manage stress and build a positive self-image.
According to Education Week, 40 percent of U.S. students have reported experiencing persistent feelings of sadness in the past year. To help address this important nation-wide issue, Mission CISD is launching new, supportive resources - including Calming Corners, Affirmation Mirrors, and dedicated Mental Health Counseling spaces to empower students to manage their emotional and mental health with confidence.
A SAFE HAVEN FOR STUDENTS' EMOTIONAL NEEDS
These resources were recently rolled out at Bryan Elementary School, Kenneth White Junior High, and Mission High School, with plans to expand to additional campuses across the district in the future. Early feedback has shown promising results, creating a positive and supportive environment for students.
“These new spaces are designed to be safe havens for our students,” said Jeanette Gonzalez-Ballesteros, Mission CISD Licensed Professional Counselor. “They provide a quiet, supportive environment where students can pause, regroup, and recharge. Whether they need a moment of calm or a space to reflect, these areas empower students to manage their emotions and face their day with a positive mindset.”
These efforts reflect the district’s ongoing commitment to enhancing student success by providing comprehensive support and resources. By strengthening students' emotional resilience, these initiatives help improve their overall engagement in school, fostering stronger connections with both peers and teachers.
“Our goal is to provide students with tools that not only support them now but also equip them with skills they can carry through life,” said Mission CISD’s Director of Guidance Counseling, Jesse Trevino. “We are grateful for the Stronger Connections Grant that has allowed us to introduce these essential resources into our schools.”
MISSION CISD’S COMMITMENT TO LONG-TERM SUPPORT
Mission CISD recognizes the critical role that mental health and emotional wellbeing play in student success, and the district is committed to broadening access to these supportive spaces. Additionally, Mission CISD has big plans to incorporate additional programs that personalize social-emotional skill-building, ensuring that each learner receives the unique support they need to thrive both in school and in life.
The Stronger Connections Grant (SCG) provides supplemental funding under the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) for subgrants to LEAs in support of funds for activities under section 4108 of the ESEA. For more information on the SCG visit the U.S. Department of Education.
