Mission High School Librarians Earn Nomination for Innovative Library Award with ‘Keira’s Closet’ Project

MISSION, TEXAS (November 13, 2024) – Mission High School librarians Margie Longoria and Terri Lincoln are making waves in the educational community with their recent nomination for the Innovative Library Recognition Award, honoring their impactful initiative, "Keira’s Closet."

This one-of-a-kind hygiene closet, housed within the school library, provides students with access to essential personal care items in a private, supportive environment—an inspiring example of community-driven student support.

“Keira’s Closet” began as a community service project led by Mission High student and Eagle Scout, Keira Garza, who approached Longoria and Lincoln with a simple yet powerful vision: create a welcoming space where students in need can access necessary hygiene items with complete confidentiality.

Recognizing the profound potential of Garza’s idea, the librarians immediately lent their support, working alongside her to bring "Keira’s Closet" to life through donations from school staff and local community supporters.

“She was an Eagle Scout and needed a community project,” Longoria shared. “Keira came to us with this incredible idea to set up a hygiene closet so students could come and get what they needed without hesitation. We knew this was something we had to support.”

Today, “Keira’s Closet” is stocked with essentials like soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products, helping to empower students by addressing a real need with care and discretion.

This initiative not only underscores Mission High’s commitment to fostering a compassionate school environment but also sets an inspiring precedent for how libraries can serve as inclusive hubs for student well-being.

The Innovative Library Recognition Award from the Region One Education Service Center celebrates exceptional contributions to community support and outreach, and Longoria and Lincoln’s nomination speaks to their dedication.

“I am incredibly proud of our librarians for their dedication to continuing and expanding this project. Their recognition is a testament to their unwavering commitment to our students,” said Director for Instructional Technology and Library Services at Mission CISD, Marissa Saenz.

“This project exemplifies how our librarians consistently go above and beyond to foster a safe and supportive environment in our schools. Libraries are not just about books; they are the heart of our campuses—a place where students feel welcomed, valued, and inspired.”
