MISSION, TEXAS (November 18, 2024) - You never know when a routine day at school might call for a life-saving response. That was the case at O’Grady Elementary School when music teacher Leroy Cano leaped into action to save a fifth-grade student from choking during lunch.
The incident occurred during lunchtime when Mr. Cano, known for his dedication to both music and his students, noticed a child in distress. Recognizing that the student was struggling to breathe, he quickly identified the signs of choking and took action by performing the Heimlich maneuver. After the second attempt, the student was able to expel the obstruction from his throat.
Mr. Cano credited his quick response to the training and instinct educators carry in situations where their students' safety is at risk. “In that moment, I didn’t even have time to think twice—I just knew I had to act,” Cano shared. “I feel grateful that I was able to help and that the student is safe and doing well.”
Thanks to Mr. Cano’s quick intervention, the student was unharmed and taken to the nurse for evaluation. The student then returned to class and is doing well.
The moment has resonated with Mission CISD and the O’Grady Elementary community, who are proud of Cano’s swift action to safeguard the well-being of his students.
“Mr. Cano’s quick action during a critical moment truly reflects the heart and dedication of our Mission CISD educators,” said Dr. Cris Valdez, Superintendent of Schools at Mission CISD. “We are so grateful for his bravery and are proud to have such caring individuals in our community.”
His response emphasizes the commitment and nurturing spirit that Mission CISD educators embody every day, both inside and outside the classroom.
