Mission, TX (January 15, 2025) — In a display of talent, resilience, and determination, Mission Collegiate High School sophomore Aeryn Bautista has made history as the first student from Mission CISD to advance to the prestigious UIL Super Congress, held at the Texas Capitol in Austin. This achievement places her among the top student debaters in the state, a remarkable milestone for both Aeryn and her school.
The UIL Congressional Debate is not your average debate competition—it’s an immersive experience where students step into the roles of legislators, debating complex issues and proposing resolutions, all while adhering to formal Congressional procedures. Each year, only the best of the best earn their way to the State Tournament at UT Austin, where a grueling day of competition narrows the field to just 18 students for the coveted Super Congress at the Capitol.
While Mission CISD has celebrated many state qualifiers over the years, Aeryn Bautista’s advancement to Super Congress marks a first for the district, cementing her legacy as a trailblazer.
A Record of Excellence
Aeryn’s achievements extend far beyond the Congressional chamber. As a sophomore, she has already:
- Reached the quarterfinals of the UIL State Cross-Examination Debate Tournament
- Secured 4th place at the UIL State Copy Editing competition
- Qualified for the NSDA Nationals in Cross-Examination Debate
Her drive and preparation have earned her praise from her coach, mentor, and brother, Reuel Bautista, who shared, “As her teacher, coach, brother, and biggest fan, I could not be prouder of her incredible achievements and am excited to see what more she will accomplish in the future.”
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
Competing at the Texas Capitol was a defining moment for Aeryn. "The grandeur of the building and the significance of the event made me feel like I was part of something bigger than myself," she said. From walking the Capitol’s historic halls to debating alongside top-tier competitors, Aeryn embraced every moment with determination and gratitude.
Despite competing against seasoned veterans with years of experience, Aeryn’s composure and eloquence shone through. "Delivering my first speech was nerve-wracking but exhilarating. I knew I was surrounded by the best, but that motivated me to showcase my abilities," she said.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Aeryn’s journey is a testament to the power of dedication and the impact of supportive mentors. Her story inspires not only her peers but also the entire community. Looking ahead, Aeryn is already preparing for her next big goal: winning the state championship in Cross-Examination Debate alongside her partner, Gael Vela, and advancing even further in UIL Congressional Debate.
Her message to others: "Set your mind to your goals, put in the work, and don’t be afraid to dream big."
With her unstoppable ambition and love for public speaking, Aeryn Bautista is not just making history—she’s paving the way for future champions.
