MISSION, TEXAS (January 27, 2025) — Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) is proud to announce the appointment of Joseph “Jody” Cantu as the new Head Football Coach for Mission High School and Athletic Coordinator.
With over a decade of coaching experience, Cantu is eager to lead the Eagles to new heights.
Cantu joins the Eagles after 11 years on the coaching staff at Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District where he most recently served as Defensive Coordinator, Associate Head Coach, and Powerlifting Coach at Robert Vela High School.
His extensive background in coaching, combined with his commitment to developing student - athletes both on and off the field, makes him an ideal leader for the program.
“I'm incredibly honored to take on the role of Head Football Coach for the Mission Eagles,” said Cantu. “This program has a rich tradition, and I’m excited to build on that legacy. My focus will be on creating a culture of hard work, discipline, and unity. We’ll work to develop our players into strong athletes and even stronger individuals who will represent Mission High and our community with pride.”
Dr. Cris Valdez, Superintendent of Schools for Mission CISD, expressed her excitement about Coach Cantu’s appointment:

His leadership and passion for developing young athletes will help take our football program to the next level. With his extensive experience and vision, Coach Cantu will inspire our students to excel both on the field and in life.”
A graduate of Texas A&M-Kingsville, Cantu also brings three years of head coaching experience, which will be invaluable as he looks to strengthen the Mission Eagles’ football program.
“I’m excited to bring new energy and a clear vision to this team,” said Cantu. “Football is about more than just the game—it’s about developing young men who will succeed in all areas of life. Together, we will build a team that our community can be proud of. Let’s get to work!”
Mission CISD is confident that Coach Cantu will lead the Mission Eagles with the integrity, discipline, and pride that have always been central to the district’s values.
