Mission CISD Alumna takes a 'vital' step toward a bright future in Health Science

Mission, Texas (January 28, 2025) — Valeria Martinez, a graduate of Veterans Memorial High School, is building a successful career in the medical field, thanks to the solid foundation she received from Mission CISD’s Health Science CTE Program.

A member of the Class of 2022, Martinez earned her phlebotomy certification during her senior year, equipping her with the skills and credentials needed to begin her professional journey immediately after high school.

"Mission CISD truly prepared me for college and my career," Martinez shared. "Through the phlebotomy program, I didn’t just earn a certification—I gained a pathway to a profession I love."

Martinez’s journey into the medical field is deeply personal. She was inspired by the loss of her father at the age of seven and the time she spent in the hospital with him during his illness. She remembers admiring the compassionate and dedicated medical staff who supported her family during a challenging time.

"After losing my dad, I spent so much time in hospitals," Martinez said. "The kindness and professionalism of the staff inspired me. They were so loving and honorable, and I wanted to follow their example to make a difference in people’s lives."

This inspiration, paired with her personal experience managing a blood disorder, fueled her passion for healthcare. Martinez began working as a phlebotomist at Mission Regional Medical Center just months after graduating high school, officially starting her role when she turned 18. She credits her teachers, especially her phlebotomy instructor, for encouraging her to see the certification not just as a resume enhancement but as a gateway into the medical field.

"My teacher pushed me to pursue this as a career," Martinez said. "Now, I have one foot in the door of the medical field, and I couldn’t be more grateful."

Today, Martinez is furthering her education as a radiology major at South Texas College, where she is preparing to advance her medical career. She hopes to specialize in neuroradiology or surgical radiology, inspired by her love for helping others and her deep connection to the medical field.

"Mission CISD provided me with the resources and opportunities to build a future I am passionate about," she said. "I encourage students to explore all the pathways available to them and to focus on what truly inspires them."

The Health Science CTE Program at Mission CISD offers students a unique chance to gain hands-on experience and industry-recognized certifications, empowering them to enter the workforce immediately after high school or pursue further education.

Mission CISD is proud to celebrate Valeria Martinez as a shining example of the impact of its Career and Technical Education programs. Her story highlights the district’s commitment to preparing students for success in college, career, and life.
