Mission CISD campus personnel update emergency response training

Campus personnel from Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) schools are spending some time this week getting trained on important aspects of emergency preparedness and response. The training is being done through the Mission Fire Department’s Emergency Management program and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

While many school district and campus officials have been through similar trainings, the district recently identified the need to offer more.

“We have had a fair amount of movement of campus personnel over the last few years,” explained Sylvia Cruz, coordinator for risk management. “As the potential members of any emergency response teams at the campus level change, we need to make sure they are kept up to date with these types of trainings. Plus this can also be a great refresher for some staff members.”

The employees are being led through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s introductory training on the Incident Command System and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).  These courses provide a history, features and principles in an incident command system. Participants also learn about the important components involved in NIMS that include: preparedness, communications, information management, resource management, and command/management.

The lessons learned are used by personnel as they address the needs of each of their schools and helps to build a better emergency plan. The district uses an online system for emergency planning and response that is also accessible by area first responders.

The individuals attending this current training ranges from campus principals, to counselors, to teachers, to custodians. Campus staff selected by each school serves a major role in that school’s emergency planning and response team.
