VMHS students selected for NASA aerospace program

Six Veterans Memorial High School students have been accepted into the Texas High School Aerospace Scholars program. This competitive, NASA sponsored program offers the students a one-of-a-kind experience to help them explore the possibilities of a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related major or career. The students selected are (left to right): Karina Gamboa, Andrea Garcia, Ricardo G. de la Garza, Henry Davis, Christian Esquivel. Not pictured is Judith Haro.

In addition to their regular studies, these six students have also spent part of their junior year in online space exploration studies, and participating in an online community that has included chat session with subject matter and NASA engineers/scientists. They have also been conducting research about leading STEM professionals. Some of their studies have also included modules about NASA and aeronautics history, the development of colonies for the Moon and Mars, a space station, and asteroid experimentation. Each module ended with an exam and design concepts for space exploration.

Now that the modules are completed, the students qualify for the hands-on experience to be held at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX this summer. The summer program lasts six days and includes: engineer, scientist and astronaut briefings; tours of Space Center facilities; team projects directed by NASA engineers/scientists; and hands-on engineering activities.
