Mission CISD and Mission Historical Museum partnership to help schools with community awareness

Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) is partnering with the Mission Historical Museum on a project that will provide teachers with some special training Saturday, December 6, at the Museum’s John H. Shary Building.

Called a place-based institute, the workshop is designed to give teachers and school leaders a better understanding of community, local stories, local ecology, and where they live so that it can be worked into their teaching and learning processes. The workshop will be led by Dr. Francisco Guajardo, an associate professor of educational leadership at The University of Texas Pan American.

“We think it is important for students to know more about their local history and take pride in the community they live,” said Alenn Garza, secondary coordinator for social studies. “Working with the museum, we hope to continue to develop the skill set of place-based learning.”

Garza also said studies indicate that students who value community tend to grow up with a more heightened appreciation for their school, their families, and their community which leads them to be more likely to contribute to the development of their community as they come of age.

Part of the goals of this training and partnership is to continue nurturing the understanding and value of the Mission community by students.
