Veterans Memorial FFA Chapter has a “banner year” at livestock shows

                Mission, Texas- The Veterans Memorial FFA Chapter has had what they consider a banner year during the recent livestock exhibition show season. Between the South Texas Agricultural Roundup (STAR) and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show (RGVLS), chapter members earned the following: three grand champions, one reserve grand champion, five breed champions, five champion showman belt buckle winners, one reserve champion showman belt buckle winner, 19 excellent shop projects that made it to the live auction, 26 livestock projects that made it to the premium auctions, and three RGVLS academic scholarships.

                Students earning champion standing for their projects: Javier Martinez, grand champion market hog; Zenaida Alaniz, grand champion market lamb; Jose Salinas, champion light weight market goat; Zenaida Alaniz, champion lamb showman 15-16 year olds; A.J. Barba, champion senior lamb showman; Roy Guerrero, champion senior breeding goat showman; Jose Salinas, champion junior goat showman; Javier Martinez, reserve champion hog showman 15-16 year olds.

                Market lamb division: A.J. Barba, first place.

                Market goat division: Marissa Garcia, second place; Bella Alaniz, fifth place; Alexandra Salinas, sixth place.

                Breeding cattle division: David Bazan, second place and seventh place overall in commercial heifer division; Christina Reyna, fourth place and eighth place overall in commercial heifer division.

                Breeding goat division: Roy Guerrero, second place.

                Students earning champion standing for their projects: Jose Salinas, grand champion market goat; Roy Guerrero, reserve grand champion commercial Boer breeding goat; Bella Alaniz, champion fine wool cross lamb and champion intermediate lamb showman (12-14 year olds); Jose Salinas, champion light heavy weight market goat.

                Other top animal projects: A.J. Barba, first place Brahman market steer; Javier Sanchez, second place ABC market steer; A.J. Barba, second place Hampshire hog; Javier Martinez, second place cross bred hog; Jorge Salinas, second place heavy weight market goat; Fernando Gonzalez, second place, light weight market goat; Zenaida Alaniz, third place Santa Gertrudis steer; Kendra Garcia, third place fine wool cross lamb; Marcus Cordova, third place medium wool lamb; Emilio Hernandez, third place market goat; Alexandra Salinas, third place market goat.
