Number of students earning professional certifications in field of criminal justice jumps

Mission, Texas- The field of criminal justice has seen an increase in student interest at Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District). One of the results of that interest and commitment is reflected in the number of Mission CISD high school students who have earned professional certifications in the criminal justice field that will allow them to step directly into the professional workforce after graduation.

A new offering this year, was the National Emergency Communications Certification (NECC). A total of 48 students from Mission High School (MHS) and Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) have earned this certification that can help them enter the workforce as a 911 operator or emergency services dispatcher.

Over 100 students successfully completed the Texas Level II Security Guard Certification. This training covers a broad range of skills and knowledge that includes: emergency procedures, legal issues, conflict and crisis management, crime and accident prevention, and tactical training. This certification is a requirement for entry into the field of security services.

“What is most exciting about these students achieving the professional level certification is that most of them will not stop at this level,” said Sergio Pena, director for career and technical education. “More and more of our students will use these skills as a starting point to build a career and continue on in their educations towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.” He also said this can set them on a path towards law enforcement careers that open up more when they become 21 years of age.
