Mission, Texas- Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) has announced the names of its Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year. The announcement was made during a special luncheon today, honoring the Teachers of the Year for each of the district’s schools. The event was timed to fall during Teacher Appreciation Week.
The Mission CISD Elementary Teacher of the Year is Donna O. Robles from Midkiff Elementary School. Robles has been teaching for 23 years and has been in her current position for 21 of those years. Robles is currently a second grade teacher.
The Mission CISD Secondary Teacher of the Year is Sammy L. Rivera. Rivera is a seventh grade Science teacher at Alton Memorial Jr. High School. He has been with the district and Alton Memorial Jr. High for eight years.
These two teachers were selected by a panel of judges consisting of a cross-section of the Mission area community. Robles and Rivera will now represent Mission CISD as Teachers of the Year during the next school year. They will also be entered into the Region One Teacher of the Year contest, which is affiliated with the state and national programs. The applications used by Mission CISD are the same ones used in those programs. They include information on the teachers, including: professional background, educational history, community involvement, philosophy of teaching, and ideas on educational issues and trends.
Mission CISD has had a Regional Teacher of the Year three years in a row and four of the past five years.

Najera, Newcomers Academy; Lorena Rodriguez, O’Grady Elementary School; Belinda Carrera, Pearson Elementary School; Leovigildo Cantu, Salinas Elementary School; Janie Mandujano, Waitz Elementary School. Jose Delgado, R. Cantu Jr. High School; David Land, Mission Jr. High School; Jose L. Sanchez, K. White Jr. High School; Nellie Kvapil, Mission Collegiate High School; Victoria Rojas, Mission High School; Ramiro Reyes, Mission Options Academy; Cynthia Villarreal, Roosevelt Alternative School; Jeff Espino, Veterans Memorial High School.
