Bryan Elementary students win Citrus Fiesta Shoebox Float contest

Mission, Texas- Six students from Bryan Elementary School took home the top prizes in the annual Texas Citrus Fiesta Shoebox Float competition. Through this contest, fourth and fifth grade students create parade floats from shoeboxes, using products grown in the Rio Grande Valley and that represent the Citrus Fiesta’s annual theme. The theme for this year is “Citrus, Comics, and Cartoon Characters.” This is one of several preliminary events leading into the main Citrus Fiesta celebrations.

In the fourth grade contest the winners were: Kyle Gerlach, first place; Amelia Lugo, second place; Jonathan Salinas, third place. In the fifth grade contest, the winners were: Rylie Barnett, first place; Kyla Sharpe, second place; Lauren Ochoa, third place.

The Shoebox Float winning entries are on display at the Speer Memorial Library through the rest of the year.

If you would like to see larger floats, Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) and many of its schools will have floats and other entries into the Parade of Oranges that will be held on Saturday, January 30. The parade traditionally travels along Conway and begins at 3:00 p.m.
