VMHS HOSA students advance to state competitions

            Mission, Texas- Quite a few students from the Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) are advancing to state competitions, based upon their performance at recent Area level competitions. The Texas HOSA State Conference will be held in Galveston, Texas in mid-April.

            Mirna Rodriguez will compete in Medical Reading after placing third at the area level. Kimberly Garza is advancing in Medical Terminology competitions. She placed third at the area level. After placing first at the area competition in Interviewing Skills, Albert Casanova is advancing to state. Michelle Mata placed first at area competitions and is advancing to state in the Extemporaneous Health Poster competition. Kellen Shults qualified for state in Medical Math after placing third at the area level. Four students are advancing in the Health Care Issues Exam contest. They are: Brianna Casares, David Moreno, Karina Farias, Zenaida Alaniz.

            The Community Awareness Campaign, Love Shouldn’t Hurt, is advancing to state. The team members for this are: Karina Farias, Maria Diaz, Zenaida Alaniz. They placed first in the area competitions.

            The National Service Project team is also advancing to the state conference. Team members are: Isaac Martinez, Brittany Bazaldua, Hannabeth Medina. This national project is in support of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

            So far, five members of the VMHS HOSA chapter will be honored with the Barbara James Service Award. This is given to HOSA members who complete at least 50 community service hours in qualifying services, within a specific time period. The student earning this honor so far are: Dania Rodriguez, Sandra Vega, Kimberly Garza, Alex Hernandez, Jackie Moreno.
