Destination Imagination team advances to state competition

            Mission, Texas- The Destination Imagination (DI) teams of Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) had a very strong showing at the recent South Border Bridge regional competition that brought together 220 teams from the area for a day full of intense and fun competitions. About 1,500 students were involved in the event.

            Fifteen of the 29 Mission CISD teams placed at the South Border Bridge Destination Imagination tournament. One from Escobar/Rios Elementary School will be advancing to the Texas Destination Imagination State competition to be held in Anna, Texas in early April. The members of the Escobar/Rios Guardians of Imagination are: Kayla Calderon, Sophia Cano, Oscar, Coronado, Asael Garcia, Camila Marin, Zoe McLelland, Jacquelyn Yruegas. Their team manager is Melissa Garcia.

            Destination Imagination allows children from second grade through high school to use their prior knowledge, creativity, and research skills to solve challenges as a team, while pushing their imaginations to the limits. Over an eight-week period, students work together to plan, organize, research, and create their Team Challenge, write a script, make props and costumes: while learning problem-solving skills, communications, and teamwork.

            Other Mission CISD DI teams were recognized with special honors. R. Cantu Jr. High School’s Team Suave was awarded the Da Vinci Award for outstanding creativity. The Alton Elementary School Rebellious Patriots and the Veterans Memorial High School team each received the Renaissance Award in their competitions. The Renaissance Award is given to the team that demonstrates outstanding design, engineering, execution, and performance in solving their challenge.

            Mission CISD DI teams recognized during the massive awards ceremony were: Alton Memorial Jr. High School, The Technical Falcons, second place; R. Cantu Jr. High School, Team Suave, second place; Veterans memorial High School, second place; Mission Collegiate High School, second place; a second team from Mission Collegiate High School, second place; Mission Jr. High School, third place; Midkiff Elementary School, Boole Uoogle Mystery Bunch, fourth place; K. White Jr. High School, Lady Ninjas, fourth place; Cantu Elementary School, Shining Stars, fifth place; Midkiff Elementary School, The Super Loud Midkiff Creators, fifth place; Escobar/Rios Elementary School, The 7 Tinker Thinkers, sixth place; Leal Elementary School, The Fearless Owls, sixth place; K. White Jr. High School, Teenage Mutant Pop Tarts, sixth place; Escobar/Rios Elementary School, Musical Achievers, sixth place.

            The Border Bridge Destination Imagination tournament was held at Veterans Memorial High School. The awards ceremony was held at Neuhaus Gym at Mission High School.
