The Mission CISD Battle of the Bluebonnet Books ends in a tie

Mission, Texas- It is an annual literary battle, and for the first time it ended in a tie for first place. The Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) Battle of the Bluebonnet Books was held recently. The quiz-show style contest pits teams of students from the district’s elementary and junior high schools against each other. Students in grades 3-6 participate.

This year, two teams tied for the top spot. They are Cavazos Elementary School and Mims Elementary School. The members of the Cavazos Elementary School team are, left to right: Armando Sierra (district instructional technology strategist) Marissa Sandoval, Bianca Cienega, Cicci Maldonado, Juan Perez, Denis Cirlos (librarian), Walter Walker, Dr. Ricardo Lopez (superintendent).

The members of the Mims Elementary School team are, left to right: Christian Guzman, Lauren Sanchez, Jonathan Salinas, Evelyn Salinas, Victoria Olivarez. On the back row are: Armando Sierra, district instructional technology strategist; Terry Benavides, librarian; Yvonne Zamora, principal; Dr. Ricardo Lopez, superintendent.

Other top place finishers in the Battle of the Bluebonnets are: K. White Jr. High School, second place; Mission Jr. High School, third place.

For several years, Mission CISD librarians have used the Texas Library Association's Bluebonnet Book Awards program to help encourage elementary and junior high school students to read a wide variety of books. The Bluebonnet books consist of 20 different books, selected by a committee of librarians from the Texas Library Association.

The annual Mission CISD Battle of the Bluebonnet Books contest challenges the campus teams of five with answering several questions about each of the 20 books on the Bluebonnet list in a quiz show style format. The concept was first introduced by, then Bryan Elementary School librarian, Charlyn Trussell, seven years ago.
