Mission CISD parents invited to special drug awareness event

Mission, Texas- As a part of Mission CISD’s (Consolidated Independent School District) continuing drug and alcohol awareness efforts, the district is holding a special parent event on Monday, March 7, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial High School gyms. There will be sessions in English and Spanish running at the same time, starting at 6:00 p.m.

What Every Parent Should Know About Drug Awareness, will include important information and presentations by district officials and community partners. Presenters will provide information about the latest trends, warning signs of abuse, what to do if a parent suspects a problem, and where to go for help.

“Providing this type of information has been a regular part of parent and student meetings for many years,” explained Dr. Ricardo López, superintendent. “However, this event will bring together more resources than what may be available at individual campus meetings. Plus, it ties in with some of the anti-drug and alcohol reminders our older students receive leading into spring break.”

District officials said the local law enforcement officers, who are a part of parent meetings, have been sharing information about the latest developments in the drug scene for many years, and are constantly keeping their presentations up to date. “By the time something hits the media, in most cases, the information has already been a part of parent or student sessions,” said Dr. López. “We also know many parents cannot make some meetings where this information is shared, so this provides another opportunity for them.”

Dr. López also said the district is working on more parent-focused events for the future that will be designed to continue improvements in student and school safety and security.
