Mission, Texas- Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) has announced the names of its Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year. The announcement was made during a special luncheon today, honoring the Teachers of the Year for each of the district’s schools. The event was timed to fall during Teacher Appreciation Week.
The Mission CISD Elementary Teacher of the year is Maria Del Jesus Ramirez from Castro Elementary School. Ramirez has been teaching for 13 years and has been in her current position for five years. She is currently teaching first grade.
The Mission CISD Secondary Teacher of the Year is Cecilia Villarreal-Rodriguez from Alton Memorial Jr. High School. Villarreal-Rodriguez is a seventh grade English teacher. She has five years teaching experience with four years in her current position.
These two teachers were selected by a panel of judges consisting of a cross-section of the Mission area communities. Ramirez and Villarreal-Rodriguez will now represent Mission CISD as Teachers of the Year during the next school year. They will also be entered into the Region One Teacher of the year contest, which is affiliated with the state and national programs. The applications used by Mission CISD are the same ones used in those programs. They include information on the teachers, including: professional background, educational history, community involvement, philosophy of teaching, and ideas on educational issues and trends.

Perez, Leal Elementary School; Sheila Peña, Marcell Elementary School; Illiana Gomez, Midkiff Elementary School; Guadalupe Saenz, Mims Elementary School; Karla Garza, Newcomers Academy; Imba Ramsey, O’Grady Elementary School; Sonia A. Treviño, Pearson Elementary School; Samuel Tagle III, Salinas Elementary School; Corina Avila, Waitz Elementary School; Richard Obligar, K. White Jr. High School; Dawne Hill-Varlack, Mission Jr. High School; Manuel M. Villarreal, R. Cantu Jr. High School; Imelda R. Becho, Mission High School; Alfredo Barreiro, Veterans Memorial High School; Jesus H. Montemayor, Mission Collegiate High School; Armando Salas, Mission Options Academy; Mario Perez, Roosevelt Alternative School.
