Mission CISD to hold stadium-sized student reading event

Mission, Texas- The name, Tom Landry Stadium, is synonymous with great athletic events. On Tuesday, May 17, the stadium will be hosting something a little different--a reading event so large it takes a football stadium to hold it.

The Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) Reading Rally will bring together elementary students from all its elementary schools in grades 1-5 for the event. Over 6,000 students, parents, and special guests will be in attendance. The Reading Rally is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

Not only will this be one of the largest reading gatherings in all of South Texas, it will also hold the largest choral-reading in Deep South Texas. This involves everyone in the stadium, reading part of a book, aloud and in unison (or as close to in unison as you can get over 6,000 people).

The Mission CISD Reading Rally will also feature a joint reading by Mission High School head football coach Koy Detmer and Veterans Memorial High School head football coach David Gilpin, appearances by local and area dignitaries, a competitive book character costume parade, and other fun activities. Special video greetings will also be shown from several local cities as well as from broadcast companies. Detmer and Gilpin will read Superstars of the Dallas Cowboys by Matt Scheff. The choral-reading event will use the book, Football, by Robbie Byerly.

The event is designed to help promote reading as a fun way to spend spare time, and to help kick off the district’s summer reading program for students.

Students who are not able to attend the Reading Rally and the younger grades will participate via live video feed from their schools.
