High school book battle results in lots of reading

Mission, Texas- Students at the three high schools of Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) had an opportunity to enjoy some “good reads,” and participate in friendly competition. Mission Collegiate High School (MCHS), Mission High School (MHS), and Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) librarians promoted a literary initiative called the Battle of the TAYSHAS. It was an academic book bowl for students who enjoy reading and are determined to prepare themselves for the challenges of college literary reading.

The participating students were provided with a recommended list of books from the Texas Library Association’s TAYSHAS Reading List. Each campus selected a team of five students who went on to represent their school in a trivia challenge consisting of questions about the books on the recommended list.

The team members from MCHS are: Jude Rodriguez, Xitlali Villanueva, Alejandra Madrigal, Danielle Ramirez, Doris Sarabia. The team members from MHS are: Anahi Barajas, Enrique Pina, Eduardo Calvillo, Josie Cardoza. The team members from VMHS are: Nyla Vela, Jennifer Elizondo, Sarai Muniz, Frida Barragan, Citlali Haro Franco.

At the end of the “battle” the team from MCHS was announced as the winner. Second place went to MHS; and the team from VMHS came in third place. The scores were very close and competitive. Each member of the winning team from MCHS received a Kindle Fire as a prize.
