MHS T-STEM Academy renewed by state

Mission, Texas- Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) officials have been notified that the district’s application for designation of the Mission High School (MHS) Eagle T-STEM Academy as a Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academy has been approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). MHS was one of only 91 schools in the state to earn this special designation, in 2014.  The designation is valid for one school year and must be renewed annually and has been approved each year. Designations allow academies to access professional development, receive technical assistance, and participate in the network of T-STEM Academies.

The MHS Eagle T-STEM Academy operates like a school within a school. This will mark the third year the program has received the official state designation. Students who choose to be a part of the Eagle T-STEM Academy as freshmen can graduate high school with 12-30 college credits, and/or an Associate’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science. About 350 students at MHS will be taking advantage of the T-STEM program that includes studies in Engineering, Computer Science, and Health Science.

The TEA acknowledges that designated academies showcase innovative instruction methods which integrate technology and engineering into science and math instruction.

Goals of STEM related instruction include: create critical thinkers, increase science literacy, prepare the next generation of innovative thinkers; and to help generate the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians who will create new ideas and industries.
