Education Foundation surprises district employees with grants/scholarships

            Mission, Texas- Members of the Education Foundation (EF) of Mission CISD along with members of Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) administration popped in on ten unsuspecting campus staff members throughout the district to award they with mini-grants or scholarships. The honorees had applied for the grants and scholarships through the EF of Mission CISD and were selected from among those who applied. Each mini-grant and scholarship is worth $1,000. The mini-grants will be used by the teachers and counselors to serve their students. The scholarships will be used by the employees to help defray costs associated with the efforts to further their educations. A total of $10,000 was awarded in this round of mini-grants and scholarships.

            The mini-grant winners were: Rhonda Pena, teacher, Bryan Elementary School; Maria Aparicio, teacher, Escobar/Rios Elementary School; Georgina Trevino, ESL strategist; Jessica Balderrama, teacher, Waitz Elementary School; Araceli Muniz, counselor, Mission Jr. High School.

            The scholarship winners were: Mariel Hernandez, teacher, Leal Elementary School; Maria Marissa Garza, academic coach, Leal Elementary School; Brenda Hernandez, teacher, O’Grady Elementary School; Erica Santana, teacher, R. Cantu Jr. High School; Jannell Hernandez, nurse aide, Mission High School.

            This marks the first round of mini-grants and staff scholarships to be awarded by the EF of Mission CISD, which was formed just over a year ago. The EF of Mission CISD had earlier provided for student scholarships for select 2016 graduates of each Mission CISD high school. A total of $7,500 was awarded in student scholarships.
