Elementary student poetry selected for national publication

            Mission, Texas- The creative writing efforts of 25 students at Midkiff Elementary School will be featured in an upcoming national publication. As a part of their studies at school, the librarian Sandra Rios worked with third, fourth, and fifth graders on the elements of haiku poetry. Students wrote and illustrated their own haikus. Twenty-five of the students’ written projects were selected for inclusion in the next publication of Young American Poetry Digest that is due out in October 2017. Poems were selected based on creativity, age appropriateness, sensory/figurative language, structure and poetic techniques.

            The third grade poets selected are: Mia Ayala, Keydey Bautista, Hailey Botello, Evelyn Castorena, Andrea Pena. The fourth graders are: Thamara Garcia, Desire Jaime, Andrea Luna, Elioenai Munoz, Mikaela Segundo, Aliyah Torres, Jazhiel Trevino. The fifth graders are: Aaliyah Eaden, Holly Garza, Benjamin Kegley, Emmanuel Kelley, Adriana Cristian Quintero, Stefanny Sanchez, Angel Tovar, Tyler Vela.
