Mission High School's Kenya Salinas Places 7th at FBLA National Leadership Conference

Kenya Salinas becomes only the third Mission High School FBLA chapter member to be recognized at the national level by placing 7th in Word Processing at the FBLA National Leadership Conference held at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD on June 28 – July 01, 2018.  Kenya qualified to compete at the FBLA National Leadership Conference by placing 4th at the Texas FBLA State Leadership Conference held in Dallas, TX in March 2018 and placing 2nd at the FBLA Area IV Leadership Conference held at Mission High School in Mission, TX in February 2018.

 

Word Processing consists of two (2) parts:  an objective test and a production test. A one (1) hour objective test is administered at the NLC based on Word Processing competencies (50%).  One (1) hour was given for the school site production test held at Mission High School. The production test includes: all types of business forms; letters and mail merge; memos, tables; reports (including statistical); materials from rough draft and unarranged copy; and email messages (50%).

 

A total of four members and two advisers represented the Mission High School FBLA Chapter at the National competition.  The other members attending the conference were Ashmin Torres – Database Design and Application, Juan Reyna – Computer Problem Solving, and Ruben Cantu – Accounting II.  Members and advisers attended a variety of workshops, exhibits, opening session, state meeting, voting and recognition session, and the Installation of State Officers/Awards of Excellence Program.  

 

Members and advisers were treated to a visit to the National Aquarium, a MLB game between the Angels and the Orioles, a tour of historic Baltimore, and a tour of Washington, D.C. Mr. Ramiro J. O’caña, Mission High School FBLA Adviser, and Ms. Gloria Gonzalez, Co-Adviser, accompanied the group.

 

Mission High School FBLA was recognized at the Regional Meeting with the Gold Seal Award of Merit (Hollis and Kitty Guy Award).  The award stems from the nomination of the Texas State Chair for participation in projects and programs identified with the goals of FBLA-PBL.

 

Future Business Leaders of America is a national organization for high school students preparing them for careers in business occupations.  Its college counterpart is Phi Beta Lamda (PBL). The FBLA National theme is “Elevate Your Future”.
