17 Mission CISD schools receive new 2018 Healthiest Schools honors

Mission, Texas- The extra focus on providing a healthy learning environment for students is resulting in improved ratings for many Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) campuses as a part of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Alliance). The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is an organization founded by the American Heart Association and Clinton Foundation, working to empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits.

17 Mission CISD schools received new ratings and are among 461 Healthiest Schools in America by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Nine of those 17 Mission CISDS schools also improved their Alliance ratings. These nine schools went from a bronze rating to a silver rating: Bryan Elementary School, Cantu Elementary School, Waitz Elementary School, Escobar-Rios Elementary School, Midkiff Elementary School, K. White Jr. High School, Leal Elementary School, Mims Elementary School, and Salinas Elementary School. Alton Elementary School maintained its silver status. The following schools maintained their bronze Alliance ratings: Alton Memorial Jr. High School, Mission High School, Mission Jr. High School, O’Grady Elementary School, Pearson Elementary School, R. Cantu Jr. High School, Veterans Memorial High School.

The four other traditional Mission CISD schools won’t be rated again until next year. They keep their ratings earned in 2017. Marcell Elementary School earned the highest rating possible in 2017, a gold rating. Capt. J. Castro Elementary School, Cavazos Elementary School, and Mission Collegiate High School earned silver ratings last year. This means all Mission CISD traditional schools continue to be considered among the Healthiest Schools in America by the Alliance.

According to the Alliance, award-winning schools are serving as best-in-class examples of a nationwide movement to create healthier environments for kids. All Mission CISD award winning schools:

  • Meet or exceed updated federal nutritional standards for school meals and snacks
  • Offer school breakfast to their students every day
  • Meet or exceed snack and beverage requirements for the federal Smart Snacks in Schools standards
  • Implement district wellness policies and report progress annually
  • Provide students with at least 60 minutes of physical education per week and ensure activity throughout the school day.
