Alton Elementary students took on a new project this year to paint beautiful and inspiring words on ceiling tiles in order to give students encouragement on a daily basis. This comes from reading One Word by Jon Gordon. This book talks about having simplicity in your life or business by focusing on one word for the entire year. It states that clutter and complexity leads to procrastination while simplicity and focus leads to success.
“Two years-ago we read One Word by Jon Gordon and we wanted to focus on just one word for the entire year in both at school and at home,” stated Ms. Cynthia Mendez (Counselor). “Last year we focused on another word and this year, we came up with the idea of individualizing our ceiling tiles with positive and encouraging words. “
The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students all contributed to this project as well as some staff members. There are words written on the tiles that say honor, magical, friendly, love, respect, charming, explore, achieve, and leader just to mention a few.
“We hope that when the younger students in our school look at these tiles that they read them, the words help them be more confident and we hope they feel more inspired to pass the STAAR test,” states Analeesia Martinez (Student Council Vice President/5th grade).
This project took over a week for all the students to finish their tiles. This will be an ongoing project so next year’s 3rd graders will contribute their words of inspiration. The campus’ goal is to have all the tiles covered with positive words.
“When they first told me about this project, I thought it was a really good idea,” said Alec Hernandez (Student Council President/5th grade). “It really shows how the students feel about the school and how they can motivate all the students with words.”
A special thank you to Analeesia Martinez, Alec Hernandez, Alisson Low (Student Council Treasurer/5th grade), and Ms. Cynthia Mendez for providing the tour of their campus project.
