TEA nominates Escobar/Rios Elementary for national honors

Mission, Texas- The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has included a Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) elementary school among its 26 nominations for the prestigious Blue Ribbon honors. Escobar/Rios Elementary School is being nominated for the award in the area of Exemplary Achievement-Gap Closing Schools.

“We are thrilled for and proud of Escobar/Rios Elementary to be included in this exclusive group by the TEA,” said Dr. Carol G. Perez, superintendent. “This nomination validates the campus staff and parents tremendous commitment and instructional focus! It is just a small example of the quality education taking place in all our schools”

Founded in 1982, Blue Ribbon Schools is a U.S. Department of Education program that recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels, or where exemplary progress has been made toward closing achievement gaps among subpopulations while also maintaining high achievement levels among all students.

“I am very proud to have our school nominated for such an honor,” said Blanca Lopez, Escobar/Rios Elementary principal. “Student success has always been at the forefront of what we believe here at Escobar/Rios Elementary. Hard work, commitment, and teamwork contributed to this accomplishment.”

Lopez also thanked the parents of her students for their support in ensuring success for their children at the campus.

Not only has Escobar/Rios Elementary School earned the top TEA rating, they have also earned special distinctions for academic growth, closing achievement gaps, and academic achievement in Mathematics.

Escobar/Rios Elementary School and district officials must now work on a rigorous application process for the U.S. Department of Education. Announcements of the national Blue Ribbon Schools award winners will be made in September 2019. Schools that receive the national award will be recognized at the Blue Ribbon Schools awards ceremony in Washington, DC.
