MHS students take 3rd place in UTRGV Upward Bound STEM competition

Mission High School STEM team places 3rd in the first time ever UTRGV Upward Bound STEM Camp/Competition on January 25 – 27, 2019. The 3-day Robotics camp consisted of students staying overnight in the university dorms and learning the ins-and-outs of building a programming robot. A total of 12 teams from Mission High School, Edcouch-Elsa high School, and Economedes High School competed for the top three spots. The competitive Sumo Robot Challenge had great results for the MHS team. The Robotics team members are: Angel Alanis, Gerardo Banuelos, Alan Castellanos, Ramiro Garcia, Christian Navarro, and Armando Villarreal.

“This UTRGV event helps students learn more about robotics and this intense 3-day camp allows them to be fully immersed in everything having to do with the subject,” states Katherine De Anda, MHS CTE Counselor. “It is also fantastic to see our students take third place in the competition.”

This is the first time the UTRV Upward Bound program has hosted an event like this and they hope to continue creating this type of opportunities for students. Upward Bound offers outreach and programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from various backgrounds. Programs are targeted to serve and assist students academically from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.

Upward Bound hosts events year-round such as: tutorials, academies, parent meetings, enrichment excursions, community service, and summer enrichment programs. It also focuses on tutoring and mentoring for students and is an integral part of the program.
